Transportation on the roadways comes in all sizes. Consider the smallest automobile versus passenger buses and trucks or tankers carrying large cargoes. The perils of truck accidents are often beyond imagination.
Recent Accident in Rahway, New Jersey
A recent NJ.com article details a recent accident involving a tanker trailer in Rahway. Fortunately, there was no one injured in this particular incident, as no one occupied any of the damaged vehicles. Reportedly, the driver’s failure to maintain control of his vehicle caused damage to four cars. At least one car flipped over as a response to the heavy impact.
How Common are Truck Accidents?
According to a 2012 report prepared by the National Highway Traffic Safety Authority, 751,000 individuals were injured in truck accidents. The majority of the accidents involved light trucks, which the Federal Highway Administration defines as “trucks of 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight rating or less, including pickups, vans, truck-based station wagons, and sport utility vehicles.” When many of us think of truck accidents, we are considering incidents that involve big rigs, 18-wheelers and tanker trucks.
Avoiding Truck Accidents
Vehicle operators may attempt to avoid a truck accident, but cannot be responsible for the negligent actions or vehicle failures under another’s control. We offer the following suggestions to lessen your chances of truck accident injuries:
- Use car designated lanes as often as possible. This is a feature on the New Jersey Turnpike. Use it to your advantage.
- Do NOT make a quick lane change in front of a truck. It takes larger vehicles longer to stop to avoid hitting you. In fact, it may take two times as much time to make the stop.
- Consider the truck’s blind spots. Many truckers have actually marked their blind spots on their vehicles.
- Refrain from tailgating. Any type of collision with a truck can cause you to sustain severe personal injuries. This includes running into the rear of a truck that stops shortly.
Truck Accidents are often Unavoidable
Despite your best efforts to avoid an accident with a truck, you may become involved with one. Injuries for this type of accident can be catastrophic. Unfortunately, these types of accidents can also be frightening and have long lasting psychological effects.
More than likely, the police will arrive to an accident involving a truck. If no one else has called on your behalf, initiate the contact. If you are up to it, take photographs of the accident scene. Make sure to get the names of all witnesses. Treatment for your injuries should be your primary concern. Seek appropriate medical attention as soon as possible.
